One of the unexpected pleasures of house sitting is the opportunity to explore new places with a “local’s eyes.”
During a recent house sit in Brisbane, we found ourselves with a free afternoon and decided to visit the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) – and what a treat it was.
Situated in the heart of the South Bank Cultural Precinct, QAGOMA is a striking, light-filled space that blends contemporary architecture with a welcoming, open atmosphere.
Entry is free for the main collections, which makes it an easy and accessible way to spend a few hours.
Inside, we wandered through thoughtfully curated exhibitions featuring Australian, Asian, and Pacific art. Each gallery had its own energy – from bold, large-scale installations to quiet, intimate works that invite reflection. There’s also a strong focus on Queensland artists, which gives you a sense of the state’s creative heartbeat.
I especially loved the immersive installations and multimedia works; stepping into some of the rooms felt like walking into another world. The Children’s Art Centre is fantastic too – a must-see if you’re house sitting with little ones in tow.
After exploring, we stopped for lunch at the Riverside Café, which offers wonderful views of the Brisbane River and the city skyline. It’s the perfect spot for a coffee or a light lunch before continuing your adventure along the South Bank Parklands or across the pedestrian bridge to the Botanic Gardens.
House sitting gives us a chance to experience a place beyond the tourist “must-do” list, and QAGOMA was a highlight of our Brisbane stay.

If you’re in the city for a sit, carve out an afternoon for this gem. You’ll leave inspired, refreshed, and with a deeper appreciation for the vibrant art scene in Queensland’s capital.
